PhD opportunity in Dijon, France: Pollinators and crop pollination services

Interested in pursuing a research career and studying pollinators and crop pollination services? We have good news! There is a new PhD opportunity in Dijon, France.

The successful PhD candidate will:
  • study the efficacy of flowering strips in supporting the pollinator communities and pollination of a crop of social and economic importance: the cassis (Noir de Bourgogne);
  • investigate how flowering strips affect the structure and function of networks of pollinator interactions between the crop and wildflowers and if the wildflowers compete for or facilitate the pollination service to the crop;
  • will determine the species traits or network properties that support pollination and performance of the crop and they will discover how these effects are modulated in different landscape contexts;
  • spend time and have access to laboratory, field and experimental facilities, and formal training programs through the doctoral school (Ub), and at INRAE/CNRS;
  • receive training and experiential learning in insect and plant ecology, agroecology, insect taxonomy and identification, experimental design, statistical and network modelling, science communication and transferable skills.

Requirements

Essential
  • Masters diploma in ecology, biology or related discipline.
  • English language (written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of ecological concept or theory
Desirable
  • FR language ability (spoken)
  • Experience of R for statistics
  • Ability to identify insects using keys.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of working with farmers.
Institutions: This PhD is a collaboration between the UMR Agroécologie and the UMR Biogeosciences labs in Dijon, France. The student would be based in the Pole ADVENSYS of the UMR Agroécologie. The supervisors are 1) Dr Adam Vanbergen (French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment - INRAE and 2) Dr Marie-Charlotte ANSTETT of the CNRS, Université de Bourgogne.
