A new double degree program MERGE - Master of Global Change Ecology – a joint initiative between the University of Würzburg (Germany) and the University of Bergen (Norway) – is officially up and running!
This Program is led by the Department of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology (Zoology III) at the University of Würzburg, under the direction of Prof. Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter, a renowned expert in pollination ecology and biodiversity research and the speaker of Safeguard project.
A special focus of the program lies in understanding the role of pollinators under global change. As pollinators face increasing pressures from climate change, land-use intensification, and habitat loss, the MERGE program aims to train a new generation of scientists equipped to tackle these challenges. Students will gain both theoretical and practical expertise in the ecology of pollinators and their essential role in ecosystem functioning and food security.
By nurturing scientific curiosity and technical skills, the program provides a strong foundation for future researchers and professionals in pollinator conservation. This will not only boost pollinator research at the European level, but also infuse the field with fresh perspectives and new energy.
The close collaboration with the University of Bergen strengthens the European dimension of the program, creating a vibrant network of young scientists across borders. MERGE fosters cross-cultural exchange, joint research opportunities, and long-lasting academic partnerships – all vital for advancing ecological science and sustainable solutions in a changing world.
