Safeguard infographic offers a visual guide to pollinator-promoting interventions

A research team led by Safeguard partners from the HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research, Wageningen University (WU), and Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (UWUE) has examined the effects of urban pollinator-promoting interventions across Europe in an Ecology Letters article. To make the findings more accessible for citizens and policymakers, the main insights regarding five intervention types have been translated into a visually engaging infographic.

The study compares sites where pollinator-promoting interventions were applied with conventionally managed sites. The results show that such measures generally benefit both plants and pollinators, with butterflies and bumblebees responding most positively.

In total, nine intervention types were analysed. The infographic highlights five of them: extensive mowing, grazing, flower sowing, bee hotels, and the greening of architectural elements. For each intervention, it summarises positive effects, as well as potential drawbacks, and provides practical recommendations for implementation.

The infographic aims to provide a clear and understandable overview of measures and help guide effective pollinator-friendly urban management.
