Open PhD position in ecology at SLU: join Safeguard now!

The Department of Ecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences offers a PhD-candidate position in agricultural ecology placed in Uppsala, Sweden.
The successful candidate will work as part of Safeguard and will investigate how ecological efficiencies change across farms implementing agroecological practices such as diverse crop rotations, cover crops, reduced tillage and reduced nitrogen and pesticide use

The successful candidate will track ecological resource use efficiencies and how ecological processes, such as biological pest and weed regulation and nutrient cycling, drive input-output relations across farms with contrasting practices. The candidate will work closely with a PhD-student in economics placed at the Department of Economics (SLU), who in parallel tracks economic efficiencies on the same farms. This project provides the opportunity to work with actors in the entire food value chain from farmer to consumer, including process industry and retail in the effort to extract added value from sustainable farming and assess capacity for upscaling.

The candidate should have a PhD student in biology with specialization in ecology, with at least 240 higher education credits in ecology, agronomy, biology, environmental sciences, agricultural engineering, or equivalent fields.

The deadline is 2022-05-06.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is a world-class international university with research, education and environmental assessment within the sciences for sustainable life. Its principal sites are in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, but activities are also conducted at research stations, experimental parks and educational establishments throughout Sweden. We bring together people who have different perspectives, but they all have one and the same goal: to create the best conditions for a sustainable, thriving and better world.

The Department of Economics at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences offers a PhD-candidate position in economy placed in Uppsala, Sweden.
The successful candidate will work as part of Safeguard and will investigate how economical efficiencies change across farms implementing agroecological practices such as diverse crop rotations, cover crops, reduced tillage and reduced nitrogen and pesticide use.

The successful candidate will:
·         Investigate the efficiencies and tradeoffs and together with actors in the entire food value chain develop.
·         Test business concepts for food value chain organization that can realize sustainability values benefitting farmer and stimulating further uptake.
·         Еvaluate the preconditions for upscaling of the business concepts by examining the motivation for participation in those among larger group of actors in the food value chain.

The candidate will work closely with another PhD student in the subject ecology, placed at the Department of Ecology (SLU), who will track ecological resource use efficiencies.

The candidate should have a PhD student eligible for third cycle education in Economics.
